Season in Review
Leadership + Team Chemistry = SUCCESS
After graduating a number of accomplished wrestlers from last year’s team, the Roselle Park Wrestling Team had yet another successful season. Our wrestling team accomplished an overall record of 19 wins and 4 defeats. During our tournament and dual meet season, we competed against 6 State Ranked Teams and 17 Team State Qualifiers.
Usually the beginning of the year tournaments serve as a learning experience for many of our inexperienced wrestlers, however, we were able to capture both the Park Tournament Championship and the Panther Invitational Championship outscoring # 16 Howell. This served as a benchmark for the type of success we felt we were capable of achieving.
Roselle Park wrestles a competitive dual meet schedule, as usual the most exciting dual meets occurred against: Scotch Plains (W 68-6), Voorhees (W 64-16), Cranford (W 49-21), New Providence (W 66-9), Rahway (W 60-9), Governor Livingston (W 47-25), Ocean (W 31-22), Caldwell (W 57-9), Brearley (L 61-9) and Wayne Valley (W 30-28). Seventh year coach, Mr. John Ranieri had this to say about our wrestlers: “This year’s team had a tremendous work ethic and a relentless pursuit of excellence which enabled us to overcome adversity, wrestle with some of the best team in the state and win both a Central Jersey Group 1 State Championship and District 10 Tournament Championship. We as a coaching staff can not say enough about this group of wrestler’s determination, dedication and commitment to themselves, their teammates and the program”. Some highlights were:
· Capturing a Central Jersey Group 1 State Championship
· Stunning #3 Ranked Brearley to win a District 10 Tournament Championship
· 5 District 10 Champions
· 8 Region 3 Qualifiers
· 3 State Qualifiers
Roselle Park also wrestled extremely well in the Union County, District 10, Region 3 and State Tournaments. The tournament Champions were as follows: Dan Pisauro (25-10), Anthony Casselli (35-4), Russell Benner (19-8), Dennis Carroll (34-8), Frank Yuro (28-6). Other place-winners were as follows: Jovanni Raneriz (23-12), Anthony Zangari (21-15),
Jon Acosta (24-12), Matt Krynicki (25-11), Nick Longo 25-11), Rich Weslock (12-7) and Alex Aravena (28-7).
The Team State Tournament began with a semi-final victory against New Egypt (W 61-12) and Final victory against Robbinsville (W 50-18) to capture a Central Jersey Group 1 Championship. They suffered a narrow defeat in the Group 1 State Semi-Final match against Newton (L 30-29).
These highlights are a tribute to the amount of time, effort and dedication that these wrestlers put forth in their relentless pursuit of excellence. A pursuit that began in April with our commitment to the BFS weight training program, our wrestling clinics, competition in the Long Branch Summer Duals, National Duals and other individual tournaments.
We are extremely proud of the 2008-2009 Wrestling Team for their willingness to accept these challenges, generate positive Team Chemistry and provide strong leadership that led to yet another successful season.
OFF SEASON TRAINING
This off-season was extremely productive developing the necessary skills for future success. Our team wrestled a competitive summer duals schedule placing 1st in the Long Branch Duals and 6th in the 32 team National Dual Tournament. The results were as follows: Brick Memorial (W 39-`18), Mount Olive (W 37-7),Hughsville (W 40-15), Pleasant Valley (W 37-10), Montgomery (W 25-12), Pen-Argyl (W 42 – 12), Ocean (W 51-9), Middletown South
(W 31-6), Raritan (W 33-12), Long Branch (W 27-25), Spencerport (W 33-15), Camden Catholic (W 45-24), Summerville (W 28-22) and Jackson (W 35-27). In addition to wrestling, the Roselle Park Wrestling Team trains with the Bigger Faster Stronger strength program. The base philosophy is progressive overload, which is the most common training principal being utilized by most Division I athletic programs. In addition to core exercises, this program utilizes auxiliary exercises to develop specific muscle groups and fast twitch muscle fibers. By doing so, it also improves explosiveness, range of motion and change of direction. The results are providing our program with a much more dynamic and productive wrestler.
